26th CARIBBEAN BAPTIST WOMEN’S UNION (CBWU) CONFERENCE
The 26th CBWU Annual Conference was held at the Ambassador Hotel and Convention Centre, St. James, Trinidad July 17-21, 2006. The theme was “Women Moving Forward, United to Victory”. Of the 200 sisters attending, 87 were from Jamaica. Representation came from nine of the 14n member bodies in the Caribbean. The main speaker was Mrs Dorothy Salabano, President of the Baptist World Alliance Women’s Auxiliary, who reminded us that when people are united, things will happen. Other speakers were Mrs Patsy Davis, Director of Baptist World Alliance Women’s Auxiliary, Rev. Sabrina Pinder, Mrs Marilyn Davis of The Bahamas and Rev. Dr Gloria D. Ferguson and Mrs Marjorie Fletcher, immediate past president of Jamaica Baptist Women’s Federation (JBWF).
One interesting activity was a provocative debate with the moot, “Women Must Be United in Order to Achieve Victory”. The JBWF president, Sister Olga Griffiths, was one of the proposers of the moot.
The new officers installed are:
(i) Rev. Dr. Marine Princess Sands (2nd term, The Bahamas) - President
(ii) Mrs. Jacinth Wood (Barbados) - Vice President
(iii) Mrs. Alva Bernard (Trinidad & Tobago) - Secretary
(iv) Mrs. Helen Demcrit (The Bahamas) - Treasurer
Four Jamaican Sisters, Olga Griffiths, Marjorie Fletcher, Ivett Greaves and Wilma Grandison were elected to lead and/or sit on committees. The conference closed with communion service and a candle lighting ceremony.
The next conference is scheduled to take place in Jamaica in July 2007.
